I am pleased to share that I recently signed on to a letter to the Department of Public Utilities requesting that they revisit the recently implemented winter energy rates. There are concerns about the rate increases which would cause great harm to constituents and local businesses.
However, since the time the department of Public Utilities (DPU) approved the utilities’ requested rate increases, oil prices have fallen dramatically, trading at $75 per barrel at the close of the day on January 4, 2023. This letter requests that the DPU take immediate action to reassess the recently granted rate increases. With cheaper oil, utility companies have been able to generate extreme profit for themselves at the expense of Massachusetts residents. The DPU must protect our citizens from unfair and deeply damaging prices. The legislature is prioritizing safety, affordability, and equity for residents across the Commonwealth and hoping for immediate action necessary to protect residents.
